Release OSLO, NORWAY and SAN FRANCISCO, USA – November 28, 2001 Comuniq® to offer superior media gateway performance with Global IP Sound SoundWare™ Solutions Global IP Sound, Inc., (GIPS), a leading provider of sound processing software for real-time, interactive communications over packet networks, and Comuniq, a leading provider of communications hardware and software products that enable voice over IP (VoIP) communications, today announced that Comuniq will license and integrate GIPS SoundWare onto the Comuniq SMAS media gateways. The integration of SoundWare will give the SMAS media gateways superior VoIP quality of service (QoS) capabilities. The SMAS media gateway with SoundWare is expected to be commercially available in Q1 2002. Through the integration of SoundWare, the SMAS media gateways will be uniquely positioned to resolve the QoS challenges in the voice over IP industry. The traditional approach to solving the QoS problem has been traffic prioritization. This can be very costly but most importantly presumes control over the entire network, a presumption that is rarely valid. In contrast, Comuniq will through the integration of SoundWare provide a solution which addresses the voice quality at the endpoints, independent of what is taking place in the core of the network. This approach is cost-effective, puts voice quality within the reach of the service implementer, and is fully compatible with network-based approaches, if present. "Quality of service is a major concern for everyone who wants to deploy VoIP. Comuniq recognizes the need for innovative technologies that enable superior voice quality of service in our customers' products. Through the performance and resilience of GIPS SoundWare combined with the robustness and high quality of the Comuniq SMAS media gateways, we believe our customers in the business critical segment can have access to an extremely powerful QoS solution'', says Steinar Kolnes, CTO of Comuniq. The new SoundWare technology makes the SMAS media gateways very well suited for enterprises who wish to run voice and data on the same network or who use VPN on the internet as a cost effective alternative to expensively reserved bandwidth. “By integrating the GIPS SoundWare onto cost effective servers, like the Dell Poweredge with the Comuniq SMAS media board and software, we are providing enterprises with the key component to their VoIP communication network,” says Paolo Spada, chief executive officer of Global IP Sound. “Instead of reducing the sound quality when calling a PSTN phone the enterprise with this technology can extend the high quality IP communication link to include the PSTN phone.” With SoundWare integrated into its equipment, Comuniq customers will experience equal to or better than PSTN sound quality even under severe packet loss, delay, and jitter conditions. If the receiving device in a call is equipped with the one-end SoundWare solution, the call quality is improved by using the combined adaptive jitter buffer and packet loss concealment engine. When two devices with SoundWare multi-descriptive packet technology are connected in a end-to-end solution, the enhanced codecs recognize each other and act to further improve the call quality. GIPS SoundWare solutions are integrated in IP Telephony edge devices as enhancements to standard codecs, and as adjacent sound and speech processing software in softphones, IP phones, or media gateways. This “plug-and-play” approach ensures high end-to-end sound quality and improved network performance. About
